Royal Llewellin Setter History
The Martin Dingman Royal Llewellin Setter has a long and rich history dating back to England in the early 1800’s. This Regal, Rare, and Royal breed was developed through well documented and selective breeding practices, beginning with champion, show quality Field Setters and outcrossed (by Lord Llewellin) to the now extinct South Esk breed.
Martin Dingman Royal Llewellins have been traced back to the original architects of the breed, Mr. Edward Laverack, Lord Richard Purcell Llewellin, and Sir William Humphrey.

This unique breed is exceptional in the field, and even better as a family companion (a rare combination for sporting dogs). Their affectionate nature and eagerness to please make them devoted family companions, while their keen intelligence and natural hunting instincts continue to earn admiration among discerning sportsmen. Currently, Martin and his family enjoy the companionship of Queens Ivy, Henrietta, Vivienne and King Mac.
Martin is an advocate of the outdoor sporting life dating back to his childhood days, alongside his grandfather who raised and hunted Walker foxhounds. Martin's goal as a breeder is not to produce the most, but the finest Royal Llewellins, and to protect and continue the tradition of these beautiful and very special dogs.
The Martin Dingman Royal breeding program is designed to protect and strengthen this treasured breed, by raising the finest Royal Llewellin Setters in the world. These distinguished canines are a living testament to the enduring qualities of a true sporting companion. Adopting one is more than bringing home a puppy—it is accepting stewardship of a remarkable legacy and ensuring that its traditions continue for generations to come.
